Biography

Wentford "Mumbo" Gaines grew up in Anderson, South Carolina, and attended West Side High School and McDuffy High School. He played football and basketball, and ran track in high school. After graduation and working in Anderson, Gaines attended Ferrum Junior College in Virginia and played as a defensive back on the football team. Gaines signed to play football at Tennessee Tech University on a grant-in-aid scholarship in 1973. Gaines and other Black student athletes were dismissed from the team for refusing to practice after tennis Coach Larry Ware abandoned David Brents, a Black tennis player in Johnson City, Tennessee. Gaines left Tech to attend the University of Cincinnati and was drafted into the National Football League.
