The School of Nursing at Tennessee Technological University admitted its first students in the Fall Quarter of 1980, after receiving approvals by the State Board of Regents (1979) and the TN Board of Nursing (June 6, 1980). A multi-year feasibility study conducted prior to the School of Nursing’s opening established both the prevalence of a local/national nursing shortage and the potential success of a nursing program at TTU. Dr. Patricia Sommer was named as Dean. The program awarded its first BS degrees in 1982. This collection of records chronicles the early years of the School of Nursing, including some notable firsts and unique items of interest: the School’s role in the development of hospice care in the Upper Cumberland; a hugely successful nursing student basketball team; and, a Dean of Nursing who was also a professional clown. The School of Nursing was renamed the Whitson-Hester School of Nursing in 2008.
