Content Description
William Donaldson kept this ledger of his customers' purchases on credit and when their accounts were settled between 1856 and 1857. This ledger grants a peak at common purchases at his store in Clay County, Tennessee: food staples, toiletries, fabric, small household and hardware items, clothing accessories, and tobacco. A number of the accounts bear the names of members of prominent first Celina (dubbed "Old Town" after 1863) families at the time such as Varney Andrews, Stone & Oglesby (owners of a hardware and general store), and John J. Brown.
