Scope and Contents

The Vivian Barnes collection dates from 1935 to 1977, with the majority of the materials dating from 1938 to 1966. The materials primarily consist of clippings from Tennessee Tech’s student newspaper, the Oracle, along with programs from various events, such as dances, club meetings, football games, theatre and opera performances, and band and choral recitals her and her husband, H.S. Barnes, either attended or participated in during their time at Tech. The materials document their involvement and support of Tennessee Tech University.

Biographical / Historical

Vivian Barnes graduated from Tennessee Tech in 1949 with a degree in accounting. She received the W. A. Howard Medal for Academic Excellence. She married H.S. Barnes in 1950 and worked with him in his law practice for over 40 years as an accountant. Her husband, H.S. Barnes attended Tennessee Tech for three years from 1936 to 1939. He transferred to Peabody College and graduated in 1940. After graduation he taught school for a short period before entering the Army. He completed his army service in 1945 and entered the University of Tennessee Law School. He later transferred to Vanderbilt Law School and graduated in 1948. He received the Founders Medal upon graduation from Vanderbilt. Vivian and H.S. married in 1950.
