Content Description

This collection includes materials sought by Tennessee Tech Archives that illustrate social movements and protests against police brutality of Black communites and responses in the Upper Cumberland. It contains digital and physical materials. Physical materials include four signs from the June 6, 2020 Black Lives Matter protests for George Floyd and Breonna Taylor at Cookeville's Courthouse Square. One sign includes a Pride and Black Lives Matters statement. Three are black and white and one is colored. The protests attracted 200 plus on June 6 and protests continued for days following the initial protest. Threats occurred to participants and some were investigated by the FBI for being associated with a terrorist organization proposed by Trump called "antifa".

Content warning: some responses to protests contain white supremacist, anti-Black racist, and antisemitic language and images. Some responses also call for and glorify violence against protesters.
