Dero Armistead Darwin, a descendent of pioneer settlers in Jackson County, was born to George Cowan Darwin, III and Mattie Alice Chilcut Darwin of Jackson County, Tennessee on October 22, 1900, one of eleven children. He attended New Bethel School there, and later, Tennessee Polytechnic Institute (TPI), graduating in 1922.
